Child Find is a legal requirement for schools to find children who have disabilities and need services. Identification is an important first step toward getting children the help they need to be successful in school. Public schools in Texas provide for the special education of children who have a disability from ages 3 to 21, and in some instances beginning at birth. Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and evaluate children with disabilities who are in need of Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) Programs or Special Education and Related Services. These programs help parents find out if their young children are on track. Then, if needed, the programs can connect families with appropriate services early in the child’s life.

The term "child with a disability" means a child with mental retardation, hearing impairments (including deafness), speech or language impairments, visual impairments (including blindness), serious emotional disturbance (referred to as "emotional disturbance"), orthopedic impairments, autism, traumatic brain injury, other health impairments, or specific learning disabilities; and who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services.
